My mom once asked my dad “Do you think I am an apple or a pear?” He said “Neither, you are a banana.” And he was totally right.
I sooooo owe my mom one for being my model!
I wonder why the term “banana” isn’t used as widely as “pear” or “apple” is. I actually see this body shape often. The banana shape I am referring to is the more athletic straight shape. This body type is often short waisted or there isn’t much definition to their waists. They often have flat bottoms and thin legs.
Here is an example of a customer that has narrow hips and when she gains weight it is always in her middle. She wears a size 4 in a store, but every time she buys a pencil in a size 4, it is too big in hips. Here, you can see how extra fabric at our customer's hip creates a baggy, unpolished look:
A banana’s waist is very close in size to her hips. Sometimes there may only be a 2 to 3 inch difference. When shopping for skirts (or pants) she often has to buy up in size for the piece to fit comfortably around her waist. The result is bagginess in the booty and legs.
I have great news for the short waisted great legged women...you have great legs, and you will be 90 years old and still rocking a pair of shorts or a skirt above your knee. I should know. As a licenced skirtologist, I have seen women of all ages with this body type. In fact, they make up 20% of my customer base!
I love to custom fit this body type in my skirts because, so often, this customer thinks they can’t even wear skirts. I might agree with this statement if I didn’t sell custom clothing. Off-rack options are typically hard to find in a flattering or comfortable fit. But custom eliminates that problem, achieving the perfect way to showcase those legs while hugging the waist. Buhbye bagginess! I get a huge thrill when I am able to turn a non-skirt wearing lady into a Sevier skirt lover. Here you can see how Sevier's custom fit fixes the problem, creating a flawless, polished look:
So what are my favorite things for my bananas to wear? I LOVE you in pencils. More of a swing girl? No problem. Swings can absolutely flatter your shape, with extra removal of fullness.
Remember, since your bottom and legs are your smallest part, you’ll want to draw attention there with light, bright fabrics. I also really like you in horizontal stripes...yep...you GOTSTA trust me. But when drawing the eye, remember that avoiding bagginess is key. Celebrate your shape with fit that flatters! Then, throw on your flowy black top and drapey (or fitted) jacket and you are good to go!
Here are some kind words from one of my favorite bananas:
"After discovering [Sevier] skirts and being properly fitted I have not looked back at my former "go to" pieces, my only "go to" skirts for every occasion now are my Sevier Skirts. . .I haven’t really had clothes that fit for many years because I struggled with weight gain and loss in addition to a double scoliosis in my spine so my back is not perfectly straight and nothing I buy “off the rack” fits correctly . . .even with professional alterations to expensive designer clothes I just never got the same results. I have no reason to ever shop retail again for a skirt for any season or any occasion, Sevier Skirts will always be my “go to” no matter what I may need."
