The Secrets to Plating A Beautiful Store-Bought Holiday Meal by Whole Foods

November 12, 2018

Molly Siegler from the Whole Foods Market Culinary Development team is sharing easy, extra touches that can take your store-bought meal to the next level. Get out your best serving dishes — your meal is (well, will be) ready for its close-up.

Entrées & Sides

  • Turkey breast. Slice the turkey breast in  ½- inch-thick slices on a bias — hold your chef's knife at a 45-degree angle to the meat and slice across the grain — and then fan the slices across a serving dish with the golden, crispy skin-side up.
  • Mashed potatoes. After reheating, spoon the mashed potatoes into a serving bowl and use the backside of a spoon to make a swirl across the top. Want to go all out? Drizzle a little melted butter (or butter) over the top.
  • Stuffing. Arrange the stuffing in a casserole dish and reheat it so it develops a nice golden-brown crust. Add a sprinkle of fresh herbs before serving.
  • Green beans. Arrange the warm beans in a serving bowl or on a smaller platter. Make it look a little fancier by piling the beans nice and high. Sprinkle with a little extra parsley and serve with serving tongs if you have them.
  • Gravy. If you have two gravy boats, use both, and place them at opposite ends of the table. Or use a soup tureen with a small ladle if you have one.
  • Cranberry orange sauce. Serve the sauce in a small serving bowl with a spoon. Garnish with freshly grated orange zest on the top to refresh the orange flavor and color.
  • Dinner rolls. Warm the rolls and arrange them in a basket lined with a festively colored cloth napkin. Remember to fold the top of the napkin over the rolls to keep them warm.

Desserts

  • Pumpkin pie. Avoid a mess at the table by presenting the whole pie to your guests, then take it into the kitchen to slice and plate. Spoon a dollop of whipped cream near the crust of each slice. Finally, sprinkle grated nutmeg or a pinch of cinnamon on the whipped cream.
  • Apple pie. A slice of apple pie topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream is pretty much perfect. But for the adventurous, try a twist on tradition with cinnamon or honey ice cream.
  • After all, it’s all about two things: the presentation … and the food. (You know you’ve already got that last part covered.)
